HOW TO ADD TO THE GUIDE

Submissions are closed for 2021

General Guidelines

Review the following guidelines.

RESPECT YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
Remember that not everyone on your street expected to find themselves involved with your project.  If you do have amplified music, follow the sound rules for your area (eg. Seattle Noise Ordinance). For example, if your project includes sound, consider using an FM transmitter so participants can listen to the accompanying soundtrack from their cars.

MANAGE TRAFFIC
Create strong visible guidance, like an actual sign, indicating how many, if any, participants are allowed to engage with your art at one time. If you are concerned with participants coming on to your property, make that clear. If people park bikes or cars, work to prevent congestion that will cause conflict with your neighbors.

MANAGE INTERACTION
Make it very clear what visitors can do and what they may not. Consider how participants will experience your art, for example if the art may be touched – where it may be safely touched.

BE INCLUSIVE
Be conscientious. Not every person can participate in the same way, consider that when creating art or events. We will not include anything racist or hateful in the map and calendar.

EVERYTHING IS A GIFT
Just like at Burning Man, Art Compass NW operates as gifting culture. All art and events must be offered as a gift, at no charge, with no expectation of barter or monetary return.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Consider using a sign to indicate your if you don’t want your art photographed. As the artist you have the final say on who can photograph your work. If you do plan to allow photography it is pretty fun to dress-up, light-up, and welcome participants coming to see your creation.

Guidelines for Art

MAKE YOUR PROJECT VISIBLE
Your project must be publicly visible from the street. If your project is made to be viewed at night, consider how to safely conduct visitors to participate.

Guidelines for Events

SERVING FOOD
Be prepared if you serve food – everyone serving must have a food handler’s permit. You won’t need to have that in hand when you submit the event, but make sure to get it prior to 8/29.

SERVING ALCOHOL
We can’t approve events that serve alcohol.

ELIGIBILITY
All events are welcome to be submitted for the guide. We are happy to offer pending approval for the guide. Approval will be based on community health risk at the time of submission. See the COVID Page for more details.
