2436 South Irving Street, Seattle, WA 98144

Run! Jump! Duck! Welcome to Optical Course, the greatest, and most difficult, laser obstacle course you’ve ever seen. Brought to you by Jalove, a thirteen-year-old life-long burner, and Nacho Bracken, her father. This narrow, 3.3-foot-wide, 32-foot-long pathway is packed with lasers… break even one beam, and you will face excruciating pain as you’ve never felt before… Just kidding. At least two modes of play: Cowardly (a.k.a. Easy) and Doomed (a.k.a. Hard). You MIGHT survive Cowardly mode but your victory will be tainted by your unwillingness to play the REAL way. The real way is, well, to put it in a word, impossible. The Star of Death, climax of Optical Course, will surely fell you. But good luck. This is Optical Course, and you are doomed to fail.

Ritual for Renewal: Rise from the Ashes

Aug 29 2-7pm; Aug 31 6-7pm; Sept 3 6-7 pm; Sept 4 10 am-7 pm; Sept 5 10 am -7 pm

WestCrest Park, Seattle

Birds create a nest out of the blowdown of storms – they use what is broken to create space for something new to come into being. Engage with a 4-ft wide “fiery” charred nest filled with ashes, to acknowledge the raging fires, in the forests, and in our hearts. The loss can be overwhelming, but this piece offers you a moment to be with the grief in community. To help you move beyond what is broken, the nest creates space for something new to emerge. You are invited to explore this Question: What is it within me/ within us, that can rise like the Phoenix out of the ashes? As you write the answer on a piece of colored paper, you are reminded that by each of us rising to the occasion and offering our gifts, we can journey together toward wholeness.

Photography allowed? Yes

COVID saftey measures: I will be masked. I will provide hand sanitizer. One person at a time at the nest and the extra space is for people to be distanced while writing their intention/vision. I can wipe the pens and clipboard down after each use.

Interspecies Communication

12-8pm, 8/29 and 9/4-9/5

Westcrest Park, 9000 8th Ave SW

An interactive kinetic-musical-sculpture of metal birds and fish, and was inspired by the idea of spontaneous group behavior. From the unprompted assembly of molecules that led to life, to the behavior of social communities, the ability for an individual to react to change through the influence of those around it contributes to a spontaneous behavior of a larger group without a single leader.

A signature, hybrid performance of music and dance on kinetic musical sculptures. Interspecies Communication, designed and fabricated by Lelavision co-founder and co-director, Ela Lamblin. Festival attendees will be able to animate the sculpture by “flapping the bird” from 12pm to 8pm each weekend of the event.

*Following the opening night performances/presentations which culminates in a community procession (Fri, Aug 27, 6-8pm) with Duwamish Tribe members, attendees are invited to interact with the sculpture. On Friday, Sept 3 from 6-8pm there will be a drumming circle with artist, Sumayya Diop. Bring your own percussion or borrow. Following the drumming, attendees are invited to animate the sculpture.
